Senior Software Engineer (Backend), Melbourne — Test Bank AU
About the role
Test Bank AU is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join our Platform Engineering team in Melbourne. You'll work on high-throughput backend systems that power core banking workflows — payments, ledger, identity, and customer-facing APIs. We're modernising a regulated, mission-critical stack and need senior engineers who can own design, write production code, mentor mid-level engineers, and make pragmatic trade-offs between velocity and safety.
What you'll do
- Design and build distributed backend services in Java, Go, or Python.
- Own services end-to-end: design, implementation, deployment, on-call, and iteration.
- Lead technical reviews and mentor mid-level engineers.
- Partner with product, risk, and compliance to ship safely in a regulated environment.
- Drive engineering excellence — testing, observability, performance, security.
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional backend software engineering experience.
- Strong proficiency in at least one of: Java, Go, or Python.
- Solid grounding in distributed systems, relational databases (Postgres or similar), and async/event-driven architectures (Kafka, SQS, or equivalent).
- Production experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
- Strong written + verbal communication; comfortable engaging with non-engineering stakeholders.
- Based in Melbourne or willing to relocate; Australian work authorization (citizen, PR, or current valid working visa).
Nice to have
- Prior experience in banking, fintech, payments, or regulated industries.
- Experience with Kubernetes, Terraform, and modern CI/CD.
- Exposure to security-sensitive systems (auth, key management, fraud).
- Track record of mentoring engineers and leading technical projects.
Location & work pattern
- Melbourne, AU. Hybrid (3 days in office).
Compensation
- Competitive base + bonus + super. Range to be discussed based on level.
