Anthrogen — Member of Technical Staff, Research Engineer (4 openings). Location: San Francisco, in person. Comp: $200k–$400k depending on experience, 0.1–0.5% equity (last valuation ~$250M), ~1.5x industry average. Experience: 1–2 years out of college, or new grads with strong internship experience.
Role summary: We want engineers who would be an exceptional hire at any frontier AI lab — irrespective of bio background. They'll build and scale the systems behind our models: distributed training, data infrastructure, and high-throughput inference, owning hard problems end-to-end. We're a small team building frontier AI models and frontier biological systems, so we care most about people who move fast, go deep, and pick up whatever the problem needs.
Critical (must-haves): Would be a strong hire at a frontier AI lab — exceptional, production-grade code (strong Python plus a systems language), demonstrable through shipped systems, open source, or competition results. Hands-on with large-scale ML systems: distributed training, GPU optimization, high-throughput data pipelines, or inference/serving at scale. High-agency and in-person — owns problems end-to-end and is willing to do whatever the problem needs.
Important (bonuses): Experience at a target company (Databricks, Stripe, a frontier lab like SSI / Thinking Machines, or a top research-focused startup). Background from a target school (MIT, Caltech, TUM, ETH Zurich, Cambridge, CMU). Track record of shipping research infra or working shoulder-to-shoulder with researchers.
Nice-to-haves: AI-native workflow — strong use of AI coding tools. Competitive programming / olympiad background (IOI, ICPC, Putnam). Meaningful open-source contributions to ML infra (PyTorch, JAX, CUDA). Interest in biology and/or mission-driven; preference for folks interested in AI for Science.
