Anthrogen — Platform Scientist, Cell Biology / Biochemistry (2 openings). Location: San Francisco, in person. Comp: $180k–$340k depending on experience, 0.1–0.4% equity, ~1.5x industry average. Experience: PhD required (postdoc helps but not required) from a top lab/university. Target labs: Doudna/Schekman/Nobel-prize-winning bio labs and comparable cell biology / membrane trafficking / biochemistry labs.
Role summary: They'll build and run the biochemistry and cell biology that brings our designed proteins and machines to life — expression, purification, biophysics, and functional assays that tell us what actually works. We're a small team moving fast, so they'll set up methods from scratch and get their hands dirty across whatever's needed. This is for someone who wants to engineer molecular machines, not just characterize them.
Critical (must-haves): PhD in cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, or a related field from a top lab/university. Hands-on protein expression and purification plus biochemical/biophysical characterization. Cell-based assay design and execution — building functional readouts, not just running protocols. High-agency and in-person — sets up methods from scratch and gets hands dirty across whatever's needed.
Important (bonuses): Pedigree from a target lab. Experience with binding/biophysics platforms (BLI/Octet, SPR, FP, DLS, MST). Experience with membrane proteins, vesicles/VLPs, or trafficking. Strong publication record.
Nice-to-haves: Familiarity working with de novo / AI-designed proteins. Comfort with data analysis / scripting and collaborating with ML teams. Experience with assay automation or high-throughput screening.
