Anthrogen — Platform Scientist, In-vivo Biology (1 opening). Location: San Francisco, in person. Comp: $180k–$340k depending on experience, 0.1–0.4% equity, ~1.5x industry average. Experience: PhD required (postdoc helps but not required), with hands-on in vivo experience from a top lab/university. We weight in vivo depth heavily for this role. Target labs: Doudna lab, Liu lab (UC Berkeley and Broad Institute respectively) and comparable gene-editing / delivery / in vivo biology labs (including startups known for in-vivo work like Manifold Bio or Dyno Therapeutics, or top pharma R&D divisions like Genentech gRED or Biomarin).
Role summary: They'll own the in vivo work and CRO relationships that turn our designed molecules into real biological systems — designing and running animal studies across multiple tissues, from dosing and biodistribution to efficacy and safety to multiplex experimental design. We're a small team moving fast, so they'll build workflows from scratch and do whatever the science needs.
Critical (must-haves): PhD in a relevant field (molecular biology, immunology, pharmacology, bioengineering, virology, or similar) from a top lab/university. Hands-on in vivo expertise: mouse models, dosing/biodistribution, tissue work, and rigorous study design and execution. Experience relevant to delivery / gene editing / gene therapy (AAV, LNP, VLP, RNP, base/prime editing, or comparable). High-agency and in-person — builds workflows from scratch and does whatever the science needs.
Important (bonuses): Pedigree from a target lab (Doudna, Liu lab, many Broad Institute/IGI labs, or a comparable gene-editing / delivery / in vivo biology lab). Experience with immunogenicity, complement, or safety pharmacology of novel modalities esp. for delivery vectors like AAV, LNPs. Strong publication record or comparable industry experience. Experience in a high-throughput or industry setting.
Nice-to-haves: Comfort with data analysis / scripting and working alongside ML teams. Experience across multiple tissue types (liver, CNS, muscle). Regulatory / IND-enabling study exposure. Real excitement for engineering biology at the frontier.
